Cal Poly Athletics Announces 2009 MLS Central Coast Showcase
Friday Feb. 13, 2009 — San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders FC, 7 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 — San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, 1 p.m.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Athletics will host a pair of Major League Soccer exhibitions in the 2009 MLS Central Coast Showcase on February 13 and 15 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes will play exhibitions against expansion franchise Seattle Sounders FC on Friday,
Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. and two-time MLS Cup champion Houston Dynamo on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
“Cal Poly Athletics is incredibly excited to host the 2009 MLS Central Coast Showcase,” Cal Poly men’s soccer head coach Paul Holocher said. “To see world-class talent in your own backyard is just a fantastic opportunity. Whether you’re a soccer fan or not, this is an event to see.”
Last year, Cal Poly Athletics hosted San Jose as the Earthquakes played matches against the Columbus Crew and D.C. United. The Crew, 2-1 losers to the Earthquakes in San Luis Obispo, went on to win the 2008 MLS Cup.
San Jose comes to San Luis Obispo in its second year of existence after taking a two-year hiatus from MLS action.
The Earthquakes were an MLS powerhouse from 2000 until the team moved to Houston in 2005. Headlining
the Earthquakes’ roster is two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year winner Joe Cannon.
Seattle Sounders FC is a franchise with plenty of history despite entering the league as an expansion team. The Sounders were originally a member of the North American Soccer League from 1974-1983 before folding prior to the 1984 season. Holocher, a Seattle native, has fond memories of watching the original Sounders and being part of their return to the highest level of soccer.
“As a kid, I remember driving with my dad to go watch the Seattle Sounders, then of the North American Soccer League,” Holocher said. “The match they will play at Alex G. Spanos Stadium is their first on American soil as a member of the MLS. It really means a lot to me, as a fan of the game and of the Sounders, to witness the team’s return to the highest level of domestic soccer.”
On the pitch for Seattle Sounders FC will be goalkeeper Kasey Keller, a five-time U.S. World Cup participant
and two-time U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year recipient. The Sounders have also bolstered their lineup with a former starting midfielder for Arsenal of the English Premier League, Swedish national Freddie Ljundberg.
Houston Dynamo won MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007. The squad is bolstered by super striker Brian Ching, a
member of the U.S. National Team. Ching scored 12 goals for Dynamo in 2008 and has tallied 75 times in 158 matches as a professional, including a two-year stint with the Seattle Sounders, members of the United Soccer League First Division at the time.
