Seattle Sounders FC has acquired defender Patrick Ianni from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for Seattle’s third-round pick in the 2010 SuperDraft, the club announced today.
Ianni, 23, was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. He’s a 6-1 central defender who started 10 of 17 matches for Houston last season. There is a condition on the trade — if Ianni plays 20 or more MLS regular-season and playoff games, Houston gets Sounders FC’s second-round pick in 2010.
Ianni, who is from Lodi, Calif., played three seasons for the Dynamo and was part of its two MLS Cup championship teams in 2006 and 2007. He played for Seattle coach Sigi Schmid as a member of the U.S. U-20 national team in 2005 and played in college at Schmid’s alma mater, UCLA.
Ianni was the eighth overall pick in the 2006 SuperDraft.
Seattle also announced that four players are no longer in camp with the team: D-M Nik Besagno, F Jason Cascio, F Andre Schmid and F Craig Tomlinson. All were members of the USL Sounders last season.
Update 1:38 p.m.: Here’s a photo I took of Ianni running on the side during today’s practice. It’s fuzzy but I promise it’s him.-Jose
