How many international slots on the roster are currently taken up? (And are any of the 8 slots left for potential future signings?) I’m sort of unclear on the status of Le Toux and Zakuani.
Answer: Seattle has six international player slots taken up on the roster at present. They are Fredy Montero (Colombia), Jarrod Smith (New Zealand), Sanna Nyassi (Gambia), Sebastien Le Toux (France), Steve Zakuani (England) and Freddie Ljungberg (Sweden – designated player).
Osvaldo Alonso (Cuba) is a political asylum case and his MLS roster status is undetermined. Khano Smith of Bermuda has a green card which makes him a legal and permanent U.S. resident.
There are two slots left to sign other internationals after Youssouf Kante was released today. Seattle can trade for more or trade an international spot to another team if it chooses.
By the way, Le Toux said he got more into the NFL this season and saw the NFC and AFC championship games after he got back from France for the holidays. He prefers the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl but just hopes for a good game.
