Well, the California adventure has come to a close and its back to snowy? Seattle tomorrow. But what a week. Sun and shades, soccer and rain, wind and cold, El Pollo Loco and Tommy’s (the SoCals out there know).
It must have been a fun time last night when team majority owner Joe Roth took the team out for dinner after Monday’s exhibition opener win over the L.A. Galaxy. Here’s more from the day Sounders FC played its first-ever game against an opponent.
First starting lineup and uniform numbers: Forwards Montero (17) and Jaqua (21). Midfielders Zakuani (19), Evans (3), Alonso (6), Le Toux (9). Defenders Riley (7), Wahl (5), Sturgis (12) and Graham (26). Goalkeeper Keller (18).
First formation: 4-4-2
Those who didn’t play but will today, expectedly: King, Oliveira, Kirk, Clark, Guppy, Dragavon, Ianni, Neagle, Schmid, West.
Midifielder Sanna Nyassi (No. 23) on the game:
“It’s a good start. It’s a good sign.”
“There was a lot of running at the beginning but we finally made it pay off before the end of the game.”
“It was really tough on the field. It was kind of bumpy and wet. That was a little bit tough for us, but it’s good though.”
Coach Sigi Schmid said speed and quickness will be things the team relies upon this season. As for Zakuani’s speed, Schmid cautioned that it coud be neutralized by a more veteran fullback, but he was impressed with his burst.
Schmid plans to continue to alternate lineups by halves until Friday so that players don’t play more than 45 minutes in a match.
