Postgame quotes

This was the first time Sigi Schmid made changes in the lineup into the second half and not at halftime. He has mentioned this to me before I left California, that he planned to run his starters for 60 minutes at some point.

Prior to last night, most starters were playing only a half before wholesale changes were made and a new group opened the second half.

COACH SIGI SCHMID

February 13, 2009

(On the positives from this game) “Like we’ve talked about, we’re starting to get an understanding with each other. In a game when you score two goals, it’s always a good thing. I thought Fredy Montero looked sharp. I thought his understanding with Nate (Jaqua) was very good. I thought offensively it was good. In the first half, we made two mistakes and conceded two goals. And then we made a mistake early in the second half and conceded a third goal. So it’s still a case of we have to get a lot better defensively. People have to make better decisions. It’s not a matter of people being in the right places, it’s making the right decisions.”

(On the two goals scored and fighting for the tie) “With the ball, going for it was good. And it was good to see us put the pressure on to get the 3-3 tie. And we had some opportunities and were around the goal with it. For me, the thing I’m not happy is conceding soft goals. As we go into the next phase of training back in Seattle and then on to Argentina, is to keep possession and to do a good job defending in the final third of the field.”

(On this training camp) “We’re pleased. From the standpoint of injury wise we’re pretty (???). Only Ryan Caugherty, one of the trialists, is carrying a little bit of a knee, everyone else is healthy, so that’s good. Fitness wasn’t an issue for the guys who went 60 minutes today. Hopefully everybody else will get to that same level.”

SEBASTIEN LE TOUX

(On the assist on Fredy Montero’s second goal) “James (Riley) gave me a quick ball with enough time to see Fredy and Nate. And I got the ball and was able to get forward to the defender and gave a great cross and a great ball for Fredy to get his head on it.”
