A roster overview

This will be a first analysis of the current roster, with my thoughts on who’s a lock for the final roster and who’s on the bubble. Before I begin, a friend in Cleveland alerted me to the latest Seattle Soccer Magazine blog post. There’s a section on the page that acknowledges this blog. A hearty ‘thank you’ from me to the person who wrote it.

M Osvaldo Alonso — On the team; question is whether he starts. It seems he will if Freddie Ljungberg isn’t ready on Opening Night.

D Mandou Bojang — Got trial in California, will he continue in Seattle?

D Evan Brown — Looks like a solid draft pick and a nice player off the bench.

D/M Ryan Caugherty — Another California trialist who got a long look in exhibition games last week.

F Jeff Clark — One of Sigi Schmid’s local small college finds in California, and might have earned a place on at least the four-man developmental squad.

GK Ben Dragavon — If Seattle keeps three keepers, Dragavon is the third.

M Brad Evans — One of Schmid’s “coaches on the field” because of their history, and oh yeah, he’s solid, too. A starter.

GK Chris Eylander — Slated to be No. 2 keeper.

M Michael Fucito (injured) — Could finally join the the team this week or next; needs to show something in Argentina.

D Taylor Graham — Could start as one of the center backs.

F-M Emerald George — With so much offense on the team, has much to show.

D Patrick Ianni — Has overcome slow start because of injury after being traded from Houston, and has a good shot at making the team.

F Nate Jaqua — A starter at forward.

D Jared Karkas (injured) — Hamstring problem slowed him and needs to play to make a case for himself. Seems like a developmental candidate.

GK Kasey Keller — Starter.

M Stephen King — His play last week might have made it easier for Seattle to trade Khano Smith.

F-M Sebastien Le Toux — A likely starter as attacking midfielder.

F Roger Levesque — Had a good week of games and made it hard on coaches to let him go.

M Freddie Ljungberg (injured) — Designated player = starter, when he’s healthy.

D Tyrone Marshall — Adds depth and experience to the back, which needed it.

F Fredy Montero — The top offensive threat on the team as of now.

F-M Lamar Neagle — Had a good week of games and seems like a developmental prospect at least.

M Sanna Nyassi — Speed, speed, speed. A scorer who is competing to start.

F Vini Oliveira — SuperSearch winner is developmental candidate.

D James Riley — Multi-dimensional defender who has been solid since camp opened.

D Zach Scott — A USL Sounder who has made the most of his chance to make the team.

D Kyle Schmid — Physical defender who has to show more to make the team.

F Jarrod Smith (injured) — Practiced maybe twice at the most before injury sidelined him.

D-M Nathan Sturgis — Versatile player who is working as a starter on defense in the 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 set.

M Peter Vagenas (injured) — Has to show that he has overcome knee problem, and if he can, he’ll be on the team.

D Tyson Wahl — Working as a starting inside defender.

F-M Steve Zakuani — Whether he starts or comes off the bench, fast rookie should provide an offensive spark. Will take up developmental slot as Generation Adidas player.
