Today’s practice roundup

You can see it here on the Times’ Web site.

Here’s some quotes from Sigi Schmid and Freddie Ljungberg, who is pictured above from after today’s practice:

Schmid

(On Ely Allen and Kevin Forrest) “We’re still looking for players on the developmental side. They are players that we are considering for it. Having someone who is local, because of the finances, makes that a little bit easier for them, logistically. On the same token, we’re also looking for quality players and they are quality players that had good careers at UW. At the end of the day, we’ll make the decision.”

(Having Peter Vagenas and Freddie Ljungberg in camp) “It’s good to have everybody here. I think Peter’s further away at this stage. I think he’s two weeks away from getting out there. Freddie is a lot further along at this stage than we anticipated. He’s worked very hard at it. For him right now, it’s a matter of fine tuning. We want to make sure he can sprint full-out and strike the ball full-out. And also you want to be smart. It’s better to be a day late than a day early and have a guy get re-injured.”

Ljungberg

(What his rehab has been like) “They want me to be careful for another couple of days. I train everything except for the 11-vs-11. Then I do running with the fitness coach. Then because of my surgery I’m going to the gym to work some stabilization in my hamstring and my glutes. So it’s a lot of work. For me personally, I just want to get out on the pitch and play football, or soccer, to be honest.”

(Did he have pain before the surgery) “When I went to see the guy about my hamstring they told me my hip was broken and that I’d need surgery. I probably had it for two years and didn’t know, but that is why my hamstring’s been straining. “He [the specialist] said, ‘If you had a lower pain threshold you would have said something’s wrong with your hip.’ I’m mostly just happy that it’s done now and I won’t have to have that [nagging] thing with my hamstring.”

(A timetable for his return) “They’d be worried that if I start training really hard, that I’ll have a setback. In my mind it’s very, very soon if not very close to the first game of the season.”
