This guy is way cool, I must say. I just got my brand spankin’ new Sounders FC media guide and in the bio of Alonso, the Sounders FC midfielder, it says that baseball is his favorite sport besides soccer. What a coincidence…I LOVE LA PELOTA!
Anyway, I talked with Alonso just the other day. Our conversation was in Spanish, even though as I understand it, his English is good. He said he’d gotten a chance to see some of the World Baseball Classic, the Cuba-Australia game, and then I told him I was rooting for Mexico, which was in the same preliminary group as the Cubans.
“That’s OK,” Alonso said (I’m translating). “Both teams already advanced to the next round.”
Alonso said he likes playing in Qwest Field. He felt comfortable playing on its pitch and that he is getting used to the cold.
Then I asked him if he thinks he’ll be in the starting lineup Thursday.
“Bueno, vine aqui a trabajar y estoy jugando. Y creo que el coach confie en mi.”
Translation: “Well, I came here to work and now I’m playing. And I think the coach believes in me.”
