I asked the coach about the prospect of bumping a player from the starting lineup if and when Freddie Ljungberg can return this week.
“He’s still not 90 minutes fit, so it’s a question of we’ll see how this week goes,” Schmid said. “We’ll talk and we’ll figure out what’s best for him long-term as well as short-term.”
That sounds to me like there won’t be any changes in the starting lineup for Saturday. Osvaldo Alonso played really well Thursday and Brad Evans scored a goal and held his own, and there is the notion of if it isn’t broken then why fix it? However, if there is one change, it could be Steve Zakuani for Sanna Nyassi in the midfield. Nyassi sat out practice Monday with a hamstring problem and Schmid said he’d like to go easy with Nyassi and not risk further damage, much like the approach with Nathan Sturgis last week.
Schmid didn’t seem to be headed toward removing Zach Scott from defender in favor of Sturgis, who will be facing his former team, Real Salt Lake.
Chris Eylander, Peter Vagenas and Taylor Graham will likely be out this week. Defender Jeff Parke can practice but not play in games as he continues serving his MLS-imposed suspension.
