Tied with Real Salt Lake, who got there thanks to a huge 6-goal game Saturday, with plus-minus of 6.
So tomorrow the team will practice, and I’ll be checking on any injuries and trying to get a sense of who will play in the U.S. Open Cup game Tuesday. Schmid said it’ll probably be a little bit of a mixed team. “There’ll be some guys who will play, and there’ll be some guys who’ve been coming off the bench or who haven’t played much or been given the opportunity to play.”
San Jose coach Frank Yallop said Seattle is the best team the Quakes have faced all season. Here’s more from Yallop.
(On not being able to create chances and break through for a goal) “I thought in general play we played pretty well. I haven’t seen the goals on DVD or TV yet but the second phase was a little unfortunate but some good finishes. The game hinges on Kasey Keller save basically. I was pleased with the way we kept going, they are a good team. I think on tonight’s performance and I have seen them play a lot, they are the best team we have faced this season. They did well.”
(On the turn of the momentum with the save by Kasey Keller) “I felt we were just starting to turn the corner, you know turn the screws as you do in games. Then boom, as soon as the second goal goes in. It’s tough especially with the crowd and the emotion of the night for them. We kept creating chances till the end. I have to take positives out of the game, performance wise it was a good performance. Obviously, losing 2-0 is not good. At least we have something to build on for next week.”
(On the production of the midfield at this point during the season) “I think we played well. Soccer wise I thought we played pretty well being we’re away from home. We created some good chances, another night you score a couple of those. It’s about scoring and we didn’t have that final touch or that last pass to make the difference. We had good situations we just didn’t make good plays in the end.”
(On playing at Qwest Field) “Talk about playing at a great atmosphere. Fantastic for the home players to play in. I have played when it is a ghost town, when you’re not playing well. When you’re playing well and the crowd is behind you then you’re a different player. It gives them a good lift and it drives you on. The crowd is very knowledgeable.”
BOBBY CONVEY, MIDFIELDER
(On the changing moment in the game) “Kasey [Keller] makes that great save and they turn around and one minute later score and go up 2-0. We started the second half, with possession and making progress. Kasey made a great save, when they score a goal that quick in the second half it deflates you a little bit. It kind of knocked us back, but I think we played well. When you’re down 2-0 it is very hard to come back and they are a very good team. It was a good atmosphere and when you don’t play on their pitch it is definitely an advantage for them.”
