Coach Sigi Schmid wrapped up the week of practice with the update that his injured midfielders are getting healthier, but that despite the fact Osvaldo Alonso was jogging around at practice in regular shoes and not cleats, he won’t be available this weekend.
Evans is day-to-day thing, it will be a game time decision on him. Look for a second week of Peter Vagenas at defensive midfielder…more on that later.
“Every day he’s been able to do what we’ve asked him to do. There’s been no setbacks,” Schmid said of Evans. “So that’s a positive sign.”
Other options for Alonso, if it isn’t Vagenas, could be Patrick Ianni or Nate Sturgis.
Zach Scott didn’t practice. Freddie Ljungberg did and was taking shots on goal at the end of the morning.
“I definitely noticed some players this week picking up their training, because either they saw that they were losing some ground in that battle for a position or losing playing time,” Schmid said, “and other guys saw that hey, I got an opportunity to gain some playing time. So it’s been really good for the competition.”
Schmid added that he wants to get the win and three points Saturday because its a home game, not because of Chivas USA’s loss to Chicago last night. “That’s part of the package and we’ll focus on that as we go down to Chivas the following week.”
