GOALKEEPER ZACH THORNTON HOLDS MLS LEAD IN SHUTOUTS: Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton has been on fire so far in 2009, and currently leads MLS in shutouts, with six, and has 64 shutouts in his career, one behind San

Jose’s Joe Cannon for second on the MLS all-time charts. In addition to the clean sheets, Thornton also set a new club record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal earlier this year, going 401 minutes between April 22 and May 16, beating the

Red-and-White’s previous record of 334 minutes, set by Brad Guzan in 2006.

-Chicago didn’t help Seattle last night, losing to Houston 1-0. So the surging Dynamo are guaranteed second place in the West for another week, and Sounders FC needs a win to get back to one point behind Houston and in third place. A Sounders FC draw or losss and Colorado win tonight over Real Salt Lake pushes Seattle down to fourth place in the conference.

-If history is any indication, Nate Jaqua could be poised for bigger things in the next month. June has been Jaqua’s most productive month during his career, with 11 goals in 23 MLS games. He has scored four goals and added one assist in nine games versus Chivas USA. His first career hat trick came 6/4/05 in Chicago’s 5-2 win over the expansion side. Jaqua also scored in a 4-0 win by Houston last season.

-In the past three games, coach Sigi Schmid has used seven different players in his back four. Tyrone Marshall and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado have started the first 11 games in central defense, but there have been five different starters – Zach Scott, Patrick Ianni, Nathan Sturgis, Tyson Wahl and James Riley at the outside backs during the last three games. Of the 25 players on the roster, all have been used during the MLS and

play-in games played to date.

-Seattle and Chivas USA each have allowed only 9 goals this season, second fewest in the league behind Houston (7).
