Could WPS be coming to Seattle?

That’s Women’s Professional Soccer, the new league that opened play this season with seven teams and will welcome Philadelphia next season and Atlanta in 2010.

I’m told that WPS commissioner Tonya Antonucci, an Everett native who went to Mariner High (the Marauders!) plans to be in this area on June 24 to begin discussions about expansion to the Puget Sound region.

WPS is looking into adding a 10th team for next season or 2011.

The idea makes sense, given that soccer has taken off here. Might be the right time for WPS to strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.
