Spoke to the coach last night at practice. Highlights below.
On if Timbers can hang with Sounders FC: “For them it’s an important game. Obviously they’re going to come highly motivated and you can’t underestimate motivation, you can’t underestimate adrenalin and all that…if we don’t bring our ‘A’ game it’s going to be a long long evening for us. So we’re prepared to come out and play well…It’s a good team, it’s guys that are motivated, guys who feel that their opportunity needs to come as well, in MLS.”
Is this a chance for Timbers players to show you and the league that they belong in MLS?
“That’s always the case. Scottie Thompson was one of the last players that I brought into UCLA before I left UCLA so we have a history that goes way back. He’s still here [in Portland] and he’s playing. I brought him in a couple of times with the Galaxy and it just didn’t work out and I’m sure he’s saying hey, I was close, and maybe I can get there again. He sees what happened to a Zach Scott for us this year, who was always in USL and now he’s playing in MLS. So those guys know that playing well enhances their abilities to be able to make a statement to be able to stay with the Timbers when they do go MLS.”
Schmid also said Timbers George Josten and Tom Poltl have played for him. Josten was a developmental player in Columbus. He added that Seattle has been close to loaning out a player to the Timbers, but then injuries prevented that from happening because the player had to remain with Sounders FC.
