It was held today on the pitch at the stadium, where tomorrow night’s U.S. Open Cup match will be held. The Kansas City Wizards are coming to town for the quarterfinal match.
If Sounders FC wins, its semifinal game will be at Starfire July 21 against the winner of the Houston Dynamo-Charleston Battery (USL-1) match also to be played tomorrow, in South Carolina. So things are setting up well for Seattle to get to the championship game, which isn’t until September 1.
News of the day: Kasey Keller will continue on as the starter in goal, coach Sigi Schmid said. There is also a cash prize, as Schmid understands it, involved for the two finalists in the U.S. Open Cup. The money goes to the teams to be divided up into shares per player, decided by the players.
“It’s extra games, and obviously you’d like to get paid for extra games,” Schmid said. “Everybody likes to get paid for overtime.”
Schmid said the turf at Starfire Stadium is definitely faster than the surface at Qwest Field. But he likes it better than the turf in New York and Toronto. Probably a little better than PGE Park in Portland, too, he said.
