This one really looked headed for OT but King, Montero and ultimately Seba Le Toux got the job done in the clutch. Someone asked about Hartman’s tackle…no question it was deserving of a PK call. Montero was ahead of the defense and Hartman had to be aggressive, and he was too aggressive.
What a crowd. Starfire is like mini-Qwest. The fans were really into this one. After the game the KC coaches were hot after the ref and one (not head coach Curt Onalfo) was giving hi a piece of his mind.
Sigi Schmid on decision about who takes the PK:
“We had talked and it was Sturgis and Montero unless somebody gets fouled,” he said. “Sturgis really didn’t want to hit it and Montero had been fouled. Seba grabbed the ball and at that point, when players are in those discussions on the field, I think you gotta let them resolve it. If you’re resolving it for them, you’re maybe handing the ball to the guy that doesn’t want to hit it or maybe you’re handing the ball to the guy who’s now pissed off for some reason….It went in, so we don’t have to worry about anything. If it didn’t go in, then I’d be kicking somebody right now.”
For Le Toux, that’s four goals in all competition this season. The D was tough, only one shot on goal for the match and six shots period. KC 14, Seattle 9 in fouls.
