That’s the word I get from the team. It’s happening next Thursday but I haven’t been told where exactly on the campus, and I imagine its closed to the public, except perhaps if you work there.
-After the Dynamo game sometime, naturall grass will be laid down at Qwest Field to accomodate Chelsea for the friendly on July 18.
-Sounders FC plays a reserve game (closed to public) on Monday vs. Kitsap Pumas SC at Starfire.
-Chelsea arrives in Seattle sometime Thursday.
-Sounders FC MID Osvaldo Alonso practiced extensively Friday and was running with what looked to me like the first team, and reading between the lines after listening to coach Brian Schmetzer, I think Osvaldo is going to be ready to play.
Schmetzer was encouraged by the way the two teams he formed for practice battled in a scrimmage drill. The scrimmage ended in a 2-2 tie and players weren’t happy that they weren’t allowed to play for the win.
“Nobody wanted to stop the game,” Schmetzer said, “but I used one of my favorite coaches, Alan Hinton’s tactic of leave them hungry.”
Schmetzer said he feels lucky and privileged to be the head coach tomorrow. He said that because of a great goal he scored at a game where Hinton happened to be scouting another local player, he ended up with a contract with the NASL Sounders, and so began his long ties to local pro soccer in the area.
Then he got another break later when Adrian Hanauer hired him to coach the A-League Sounders, saying he must have “interviewed fairly well.”
Schmetzer is proud to be the one guy from Seattle who has played for the NASL Sounders, coached the USL Sounders and now the MLS Sounders FC. He said he loves the Seahawks, the Mariners and Sonics when they were around, and the Storm, UW and Seattle U.
“I’m a big Seattle guy,” Schmetzer said.
There will be no changes to the already agreed upon starting lineup, Schmetzer said, regarding tomorrow’s game.
“Osvaldo looks very good, and he looks very motivated, which is a good thing,” Schmetzer said of Alonso. Then he joked, “I can’t say anymore. I want to but I can’t. The boss will kill me.”
