First, here’s tomorrow’s Sounders FC story today. And yes, I like Roger Levesque’s ‘stache. I like Roger period. Great guy, as many of you know.
There was some pretty good futbol on today. Vieron a Mexico? 4-0 against Haiti, Miguel Sabah con dos goles. Hoping for a U.S.-Mexico final, because every Gold Cup should have them in the finals. It is still THE rivalry in our soccer region. Does any rivalry in CONCACAF match that intensity? I think not.
Two assists and a goal for Giovani Dos Santos. GREAT to see that guy display what El Tri believes he has the potential to do. Mexico has a tough match vs. Costa Rica in the semis, U.S. has an easier draw with Honduras.
Then I watched Club America defeat Inter Milan on PKs. I had to root for Inter because CA is like the San Francisco Giants to me. Can’t like them because CA is big rival for CD Chivas de Guadalajara, my favorite Mexican club.
That game was part of that World Football Championship that is new this year. Good for Jesus “Chucho” Ramirez to get the win as coach of CA. I liked him when Mexico came to Seattle last year and he was the national team interim manager. They should have kept him.
And finally, though this has nothing to do with Mexican soccer, congratulations to the Portland Timbers — in part because I am from there and because soccer success anywhere in the Northwest is a good thing — on setting a new USL-1 record for the longest single-season unbeaten streak, 16 games. Portland (9-1-7) hasn’t lost since the season opener April 25. Timbers beat Miami FC 3-0 in Florida today.
