The question, posed to me from another reporter and asked by me on his behalf, elicited a good response that I thought I would share with you.
I asked Kasey how an MLS team would fare against an EPL, Dutch, Italian or La Liga team and the answer was “They would get relegated.”
I modified to make it an MLS All-Star team.
“The All-Star team would have a chance,” he said. “You have guys who have that experience. If you put together the right team from America, then you’d have a chance. It’s still going to be very difficult. For example, there’s a reason why Freddie’s here and I’m here and not still playing and making the money we were making back in the English Premier League, but at the same time, the MLS has done very well in games against Premier League opposition and foreign opposition as an All-Star team. There’s a lot of talent in this league, and so if you put it all together, a $2.3 million salary cap makes it very difficult to have all that talent on one field, so when you can go into an All-Star situation and have that, you’re probably looking at a cap in that game of close to $15 million. Which gets a little bit more in line with some of the smaller teams in Europe.”
