First half thoughts, Sounders FC v. San Jose

The own goal should not have happened. Alonso should have let it go. Maybe Keller could have yelled to him before he tried to clear, hard to say what the miscommunication was down there.
But the bigger stories in this half are how sluggish Sounders FC appears against a team it should beat, and the decisions of referee Paul Ward.
It just looks like Seattle isn’t all there right now mentally. Not generating an attack. Not responding well to SJ’s physical style.
Riley went a bit high on Convey, but that didn’t seem like it was red-card worthy to me. Convey got out of the way and no contact was made. Convey was so far away from Riley’s foot that it was a shock to see the red card.
Then Ward seemed to get a little card happy. Huckerby took an elbow from Montero but not in the head, as the replay showed, and he was on the ground holding his head. This is what frustrates me about soccer. Guys flopping to try to draw fouls or cards. I know it’s part of the game but it’s hard to respect a player for that, no matter whom he is, home team or away, rival or favorite team.
There is a half to go, but if Sounders FC loses this one and in the end fails to make the postseason, this is one of those games that it will be able to point to as a big wasted opportunity.
