Here’s what I wrote for tomorrow’s paper.
Couple of things that didn’t make the final cut:
Gonzalez grew up helping his mother, Ana, run a small grocery store in his neighborhood of the Costa Rican capital of San Jose. He would still drop by and help out even after he became a successful professional player.
Gonzalez would often get into fights in games as a kid, serious as he was about the game. And it didn’t matter how big the other kid was.
Gonzalez said the money in MLS is “a little bit better” than in the first division of Costa Rica.
Gonzalez lives in the same townhome complex as teammate Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and his family.
