Sounders FC’s goal — to generate some offense

Suddenly, the Rave Green has gone into a rut. It’s 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake means Sounders FC hasn’t scored a goal in an MLS game since July 11 against Houston. That’s three straight without a goal, and four if you count the FC Barcelona game.
The goal Seattle allowed was careless. Nobody but Pete Vagenas was back to defend Findley. It was like a long bomb pass in football to a receiver with the size and speed advantage over the defender in one-on-one coverage. And as soon as Findley got separation, he put it away.
If I get some post-match quotes I will post them later. Sounders FC lost a lot of possession and I didn’t notice much movement around the goal area when on the attack, except for set pieces. At one point, the whole team was standing and watching Zakuani trying to take his defender one-on-one, like an isolation play in basketball.
The rest of the conference is winning or has won, except Chivas USA. Sounders FC stuck at 29 points, Colorado, Galaxy, RSL all getting points and Houston can buld on its first-place lead tomorrow.
Maybe the officials missed a handball at the end, but that’s not an excuse for a lack of offense overall.
Galaxy take over second with 31 points. Colo. leaps over Seattle for third with 30 (it has a 4-0 lead in second half). Sounders FC in fourth.
DISCIPLIPNE:
James Riley
Seattle Sounders FC
Suspension/Fine: 8/8/09 vs. RSL, $500
Reason: Red Card: 8/2/09 vs. San Jose Earthquakes
And now, Hurtado will miss the next game after getting his eighth yellow card of the season (second suspension).
