There were more kids and their families out at Starfire today to watch practice. There were campers who didn’t get a chance to see the team at Qwest Wednesday
Schmid was asked what he thinks about the MLS playoff format. His response:
“The MLS has tried to stay consistent in their format. I think the NBA has something similar where if you win your division, you are going to be in even if you are not one of the top teams. Now, how you rank those teams after you put them in, do you rank them 1-8 or do you keep them in divisions, is probably the point being discussed a little more. In terms of the top 2 being in and the next four, it’s usually not a case where the top 2 in the division were so low that they wouldn’t have made the top 8…so I think it’s fair.”
Should conference system be abolished?
“Lamar Hunt was a big proponent of the conference system. He gave an awful lot to this sport in this country. So, the league has been very conscientious of his legacy and the conference system is part of his legacy. American sports are set up that way. It is something that Americans are used to, whether it’s baseball or basketball or football. The single table is more a European or international type of format. Do we ever get to that? I don’t think we’ll ever really get to that, per se.
“Here, if you went single-table, there’s no competition at the bottom of the league. So you either have to split seasons, or you do conferences where it keeps teams in it. When you look at our standings right now with seven games to go, theoretically, with the exception New York, I think everybody has a shot at the playoffs. That’s what you want, you want to keep the fans’ interest as long as possible.”
