Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

September 2, 2009 at 4:37 PM

US Open Cup game thread, Sounders FC-DC United

Kasey Keller in a bright orange jersey.
Sounders FC fans just threw bright green streamers. DC United fans set off smoke bomb as game began at 7:37 EST.
Press box just started shaking here 5th min.
Pontius just shrugged Leo Gonzalez off the ball 5th min. Gonzalez stopped playing and looked to the side judge for a call, didn’t get it, and Pontius almost put it past Keller.
Looks like a good crowd in the stands tonight, and there were still people coming in as the game got under way. A lot of DCU fans jumping up and down in the main grandstand of lower level. This could be more than 20,000 folks.
9th — Montero tees up a shot from above the box that goes wide. The smoke is wafting into the press box from the smoke bomb.
10 — what a chance for Seattle. Zakuani centers to Montero coming down the middle and WIcks blocks the direct shot away in front. Montero probably should have finished that one. Wonder if will come back to haunt Sounders FC.
15 — News flash, Zakuani is fast. Just blew by defender and got a corner. Now its Gomez for DC back the other way, nice job by Riley to take the ball away.
17 — Gomez draws foul on Vagenas, free kick for DCU. I think if DC scores first, it will really hurt Sounders FC’s confidence.
19 — Wicks again comes up big when he blocks Ljungberg’s direct shot, nice feed from Le Toux but again, another failed chance.
25 — Yellow to Ianni. Can’t really afford to lose him.
DC fans continue to makes noise, and at this point I can’t hear the contingent of Sounders FC fans who are here. They are cheering, but there are too many United chants and drums.
FYI — Sounders FC is wearing green jerseys. Brad Evans is available off the bench, so is Nate Jaqua.
28 — Zakuani gets it with space and fires with a man on but misses wide. A few good chances for Sounders DC so far.
Sturgis, Scott, Neagle, Levesque also available off bench. Couple of nifty back heel passes from L. Emilio for DC, but amount to no threat.
33– After Wahl loses it, Olsen gets a shot from deep and Keller does well to deflect it over the goal.
Someone has a Seahawks blue 12th man flag in the Sounders FC section.
35 — another missed chance for SEA. Gonzalez coming down the left wing center to Montero, whose header goes over the goal.
38 — Le Toux tackled and gets up limping. Moreno beats the defense and gets a shot from the right angle that misses wide.
While it may be a good idea for safety’s sake, putting the Sounders FC fans way up in the 400 level (upper deck) seems wrong to me. Totally isolated up there and should be down in the lower bowl mixing it up with the home fans (in a good way). Oh well. At least they are here.
40 — Not good defense there by Vagenas, Wahl and Ianni as Gomez streaks down the middle with the ball and has a good shot to score, but it goes wide of Keller. Gomez screams in frustration.
44 — Oh, and another great Seattle chance is missed. Le Toux, who is playing well, with the pass to Montero coming into the middle for the header….Wicks deflects.
HALF. 0-0
And we’re back. No changes in the Seattle 11.
Fred out, Quaranta in for DCU.
49 — Gonzalez with a “good” foul. Pulls down DCU attacker on a breakaway by the shoulder, gets a yellow. Good call by ref, Leo had to do it.
Pontius just got kicked in the midsection by Riley, foul called, no caution. DC has had a couple.
TONIIGHT’S ATTENDANCE, 17,329. So credit Kevin Payne for guessing right about the range. Still…well anyway.
Apparently the Montero family is here. In the 57th minute, Burch takes a long-distance shot that Keller has to stop and does. DCU right now looks content to get an open shot from anywhere and fire away.
59 — Didn’t like what Riley did there. Maybe my depth perception was off but the long pass in from Quaranta (you guys like how Bretos pronounces it?) wasn’t played well by him.
61 — Uh oh. Zakuani down holding left leg and looks to be in pain. Stretcher out, but Steve walks off with help. I think I saw him point to his left calf. He’s trying to run it off. Now back in 63rd minute.
64 — Activity in front, ball loose, Wicks gets to it but it look like Montero accidentally kicked him in the face. Wicks is back up for goal kick.
67 — I think I hear Seattle going nuts. I hear the SSFC fans here for sure. Ljungberg makes a run, shot deflected by Wicks, Montero is there for the rebound and the follow and SCORE. Then Wicks, hit by Montero moments earlier, stomped on Montero’s ribs.
Montero needs a stretcher to come off. Wicks issued a RED card and gone. What a turn of events here in DC.
Wicks just batted a camera on the field as he came off and he is steaming, yelling at fourth official. The replay shows the ref coming in behind the play. But it seems the fourth official called the foul on Wicks. To me, replay shows that Wicks purposely tried to make contact with Fredy, don’t know if it was that hard of contact but FM sold it well if it wasn’t.
71 — Milos Kocic in for DC in goal.
74 — Zakuani limps out, Levesque in. Riley close to an own goal just before.
75 — Keller with save on shot by Olsen, bangs his knee on Olsen’s chest but is OK.
78 — Evans in, Montero out.
79 — Yellow to Vagenas.
82 — Levesque gets punched by Kocic coming out of the net, but recovers to try a header that misses.
86 — Keller makes save on long shot from Quaranta. Back at the other end, Levesque from Le Toux after Le Toux wins an individual battle, GOAL for Levesque. 2-0 Seattle, and the DC crowd is stunned.
89 — GOAL DC, free kick is deflected in front and Simms is there to put is past Keller, who wanted an offsides but didn’t get it.
90 — 5 minutes to go for a title.
DC is attacking ferociously. Keller hit in the eye but OK.
Keller with two key saves in last min.
And that’s it. GAME OVER– Seattle wins US Open Cup 2009 2-1.
