Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

Back to action for Sounders FC

And back to it for me, too, after a nice three days of time off. The team practiced earlier today at Starfire and will work there Tuesday and Wednesday, then get back on a plane for Washington D.C., practice Friday there and play Saturday.
Quotes from Sigi Schmid from today:
On winning the U.S. Open Cup:
“It resonated the morning after. You realize you’ve accomplished something. All of the guys on the team should be very proud. They are part of the group that won the first trophy for the MLS Sounders. And they will go down in history as part of that. The first is always a special thing. Now we got that out of the way, it is time to focus and concentrate and get the points we need to make the playoffs.”
On play of Fredy Montero in U.S. Open Cup:
“We were without Nate [Jaqua] and one of the things we wanted Fredy [Montero] to do in that game was stay higher than he sometimes plays and stay central, making it really difficult for [Dejan] Jakovic not only to cover Fredy but to give support to his other two marking backs. He did a very good job. I thought he occupied Jakovic and I thought he made him deal with him. As a result of that, he wasn’t able to give the support that he is normally able to give.”
On play of Sebastien Le Toux in U.S. Open Cup:
“Obviously, he did well creating the second goal. He seems to get a little bit geared up when it comes time for the Open Cup. Some players are like that. Some players, whatever it is, against certain teams seems to hit a good run or, in this particular case, in this tournament. Seba’s playing time is always contingent upon how he does and how other people are doing. It’s a factor of a lot of things. But certainly he has been a guy who we have turned to often in the season.”
On physical health of Sounders FC players: “I think Stephen King felt pretty good today. Hopefully he will be able to do a little bit more tomorrow. [Michael] Fucito is starting to come back. Tyrone [Marshall] we will see how he is tomorrow. But, as I call them, the
‘over thirty crowd’ got an extra day off today. We expect [Freddie] Ljungberg, [Peter] Vagenas, and [Kasey] Keller are fine. Taylor [Graham] we have got to see what the prognosis looks for him right now. We expect to be pretty close to full health by this weekend.”
