Sounders FC

Daily coverage of Seattle Sounders FC, MLS and world soccer.

September 12, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Game on, DCU vs. Sounders FC

5th — what a pass out of the back by Pete Vagenas and Zakuani has smooth sailing, beats Wicks easily. A fine start to a much-needed game.
I’ll be looking to see what Jaqua does now that he is back in the starting 11.
This was the quickest goal allowed by United this season, but it is 2-3-3 when scored upon first. Best mark in the league.
No Tyrone Marshall tonight.
Favorite DCU player: Fred. Just because he is Fred, and that’s all. Nothing more.
Good job by Leo Gonzalez to clear after Keller was way off his line, 19th min.
28 — Fredy Montero should have shot that one instead of trying to play it back for Zakuani. He needs to make a better decision there. Moments later, nice ball from Montero for Zakuani for the header.
33 — Good hustle by Keller to keep that ball from being a corner kick.
Sounders FC playing with a lot of purpose thus far. Great run by Gonzalez to get forward in 42nd.
44th — Why didn’t Zakuani shoot it after defender went down?
HALF 1-0 Sounders FC
Colorado lost to Toronto FC today, further creating a logjam in the playoff chase. TFC now has 34 points after 25 games, which makes it important for Seattle to win so it has 37 points after 25 and stays ahead of the Reds. A win for Seattle with Colorado’s loss also would vault Sounders FC ahead of the Rapids, though they have a game in hand.
Simms with the takedown of Montero as second half under way.
I’m watching the Maryland Comcast feed (DC broadcast) over the web. They just did an interview with a DCU fan from the Screaming Eagles from the sideline. Weak. The guy said Toronto fans tried to set the standard, now they aren’t hear from. Seattle fans are loud, but in a couple of years they won’t be heard from.
I doubt that, especially when Portland and Vancouver are in the league.
54 — Goal DC. Rodney Wallace from James Riley, yes Riley. Riley, from Sounders FC, tried to tackle Emilio and the ball went right to a streaking Wallace down the middle. Wallace finished. 1-1.
Brad Evans in for Vagenas 62nd min.
65- How did Montero not finish that? He is playing well tonight, though. Hustling and making DC work, as is Zakuani.
71 — Big save Keller on shot by Olsen.
74 — Goodness, how did Emilio miss that? He soft-footed it.
The way the momentum has swung, Seattle will be fortunate now to get out with a draw.
77- Levesque in, Jaqua out.
83 — Zakuani dribbles, and dribbles and dribbles, and…
Montero scores! Gets the pass from RIley, turns and shoots, and it’s in. Oh, Wicks is furious. 2-1 Seattle.
Marshall is in 86th. Trying to hold onto the lead.
And they do. It’s a final, Sounders FC 2, DC United 1. HUGE win for Seattle, as the readers of this thread have mentioned. This puts the team even more in the playoff mix, and what a moment for Montero. If I was there I would be asking him what it felt like to score on the guy who stomped on him yet again. He might not say much, but you just know he’s pumped. Now I turn my attention to the other games in the league….
