Please share. As I share with you this story about what is keeping this team in the playoff race right now. You guessed it — DEFENSE.
Another matter: Commenter bmvaughn is one this blog’s frequent commenters, but he says Sounders FC is not tied with Colorado in the race for a playoff seed. My point in the earlier post was not to get into all the tie-breaking scenarios, but if we’re going to get technical here, I’ll bite.
A) Both teams have same point total and same number of games. No arguing that.
B) First tie-breaker in the playoff format is NOT goal differential, at least according to the MLS Fact and Record Book — it is head to head competition against teams equal in points. That being said, Sounders FC would in fact have the advantage for a higher seed over the Rapids with a win and a draw (1-0-1) vs. the Rapids this season if the two teams ended the season with the same point total. Seattle would lose that tiebreaker to Chivas USA if they both finished with the same amount of points because it is 0-2-1 against CUSA. The second tie-breaker is goal differential against all other teams in the regular-season. Just so we’re being accurate.
