The Sounders FC coach planned to stop at one of his old haunts, Ruby Tuesday (not the chain restaurant but a bar near Ohio St. U.), tonight for a pint with some old friends.
This is the bar from where the Hudson Street Hooligans — one of the Crew supporters groups — begins its march to Crew Stadium.
As Schmid told me, he and two Crew staffers went to the bar for a beer on the Thursday before a match. Columbus won the match, and a tradition began.
Schmid would arrive around 5 p.m. when the crowd at the bar was sparse.
“It’s a college bar. Bands play there in the evening,” he said. “We just made it a habit of going there on Thursdays. I would have one beer.”
I have more from my interview with the coach that I will post tomorrow. For now, need to rest before catching my flight to Columbus tomorrow morning. Here’s my profile of Schmid that will run in Friday’s Times.
One more thing, thanks “budbud” for your comments on my previous post. This is the kind of information that needs to be put out there and I appreciate you sharing what you observed. Appreciate those folks who weighed in on the topics.
