OK…First things first. Sigi Schmid — don’t let anyone tell you this wasn’t a big deal — WANTED BADLY to beat the Crew. Just as much if not more than he wanted to beat the LA Galaxy on the road. And both happened this season.
Playoff picture: Seattle wins. So does FC Dallas, Galaxy, Chivas and Colorado draws this week. As of now: East 1 – Crew (46). East 2 – Chicago (41). East 3 – New England (37). East 4 – DC United (36).
West 1 – Galaxy (44). West 2 – Houston (43 with game tomorrow) West 3 – Chivas (41 with two games in hand). West 4 – Seattle (41). West 5 – Colorado (40, would be East 3 if playoffs started today). West 6 – FC Dallas (36, another goal for Cunningham tonight.)
So Sounders FC would be playing the Galaxy in conference semifinals if playoffs started now. The key is for Seattle to stay above New England, DC, and FC Dallas and it can get in as likely either a West No. 4 or as high as an East No. 3.
The Galaxy’s win has clinched a playoff spot for it. First time in the playoffs for LA since 2005.
This just in from the Galaxy:
Playoff tickets beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 5. The first 10,000 fans to purchase a playoff ticket will receive a complimentary Galaxy “Go for Gold” Playoff t-shirt, courtesy of Pechanga Resort.
With their 1-0 victory on Friday night against the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA’s 2-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday afternoon, the LA Galaxy secured their first MLS Cup Playoff berth since 2005. The date and opponent for the Galaxy’s home playoff match will be determined at a later date.
