Monday with Sigi

I have to tell you that Coach is great. We talked briefly after practice and he asked me how I was feeling, really welcomed me back to work, and if he didn’t know it before, I have a ton of respect for the man in large part because he is a caring human being.
Many of you I’m sure who have met Coach Schmid know what I’m talking about. Very, very refreshing in this world of pro sports.
OK so here is what he had to say today.
On Houston’s choice to stay on West Coast:
“They are doing what they think is appropriate for their team. It probably makes sense not to fly back to Houston on Monday and turn around and fly back here [Seattle] on Wednesday. Those are judgments you sort of have to make on the fly as a coach.”
On Brad Evans: “He is sort of the knockout guy. Last year he scored a goal against D.C. [United] to knock them out of the playoffs and he scored the goal this year to knock FC Dallas out. Brad has been through it, last year he went through it. He knows what a special moment it is to try to do it again and do it with another team. I thought him and [Osvaldo] Alonso played very well together on Saturday. He’s that midfielder that tries to get forward, that’s what he did at the beginning of the season and he has found his form again.”
On Nate Jaqua and his goals: “It’s great for his confidence. I know people were thinking what is Sigi doing playing him out wide. Well, he has got a couple goals now coming from there, although he was inside when he scored the goal against Kansas City. I think it creates matchup problems for the opponents. It gives us a different look. It seems to fit our team and how we are playing. But for Nate’s confidence, anytime you score a goal for any player it gives you a boost and makes you feel good about the next time you get an opportunity.”
On middle stretch of season: “I think that adversity in the middle of the season was part of a character building situation for the team. (Quoting Kevin Hartman) When you are in the middle of it you don’t really appreciate it. After you get through it you realize that it was good for us. It was good for us to struggle on the road, dominate some games and not win to figure out what we need to do extra to get us over the hump.”
On training today: “We walked in today and we are excited. There are seven teams cleaning out their lockers. There are eight teams still playing. Today is a great day. Everybody is talking about the weather but it is a great day because it is the start of playoff season.”
On how team is playing: “I’ve always said all year long that our best soccer is still ahead of us. So our best soccer is going to come in the playoffs.”
