CARSON, Calif. (Saturday, November 14, 2009) – With their 2-0 extratime win over the Houston Dynamo On Friday night at The Home Depot Center, the LA Galaxy have advanced to MLS Cup 2009. The Galaxy will now face the Eastern Conference Champion Real Salt Lake on Sunday, November 22 at Qwest Field in Seattle for the league title. MLS Cup 2009, which will be shown live nationally in English on ESPN and Galavision, will begin at 5:30 p.m. (PT).
Real Salt Lake advanced to MLS Cup on Saturday night with their 5-4 win over the Chicago Fire on penalty kicks in the Eastern Conference Championship. The match finished 0-0 after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time.
With their win over the Dynamo on Friday night, the Galaxy have now qualified for MLS Cup for a league record sixth time. The winners of the 2002 and 2005 MLS Cups, LA also qualified for the league championship in 1996, 1999 and 2001, losing in the Final to D.C. United in ’96 and ’99 before falling to San Jose in extratime of MLS Cup 2001. With a win in Seattle next Sunday, the Galaxy will join D.C. United as the only two teams in MLS history to win the MLS Cup three or more times.
One of most successful playoff teams in MLS history, the Galaxy have registered a record of 28-15-5 since the league began, including a 2-0-1 mark this season. To reach this year’s MLS Cup, the Galaxy defeated Chivas USA 3-2 on aggregate in their Western Conference Semifinal Series thanks to a 2-2 draw in Game #1 and a 1-0 win in Game #2, before defeating Houston in the Western Conference Championship on Friday night.
