Sounders FC selects David Estrada with first draft pick

Here’s what I wrote for the Times web site. A surprise choice, but a scorer nonetheless. Looks like Sigi Schmid’s ties to his former program remain very strong.
Sounders FC selected UCLA forward David Estrada with its first round pick in Thursday’s Major League Soccer Superdraft.
Estrada, listed at 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds according to his UCLA bio, was a bit of a surprise pick in the first round. He told his hometown newspaper, the Salinas (Calif.) Californian, that he didn’t plan to watch the first round of the draft.
Estrada, who was born in Mexico, scored 22 goals with 14 assists in his four-year Bruins career. He set a UCLA freshman record for goals with 12 in 2006.
Here’s Estrada’a UCLA bio, and the story in the Salinas paper about him.
Hmmm. Mexican roots, minored in Chicano studies – I like him already.
Check out the video of this kid’s skills.
