Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes (team release)

Sigi Schmid – Head Coach
(On Kansas City Wizards . . .) “Well it’s the first time for them on the road so we hope that presents a good challenge for them. They’re a team that is very confident right now. They have brought in a lot of new players. It’s not the same team as last year and that group is growing in their confidence in each other and they have gotten two good results. So we just need to let them know that they are playing Seattle Sounders and that they are in Seattle and that this is not a place where we give up points easily and take advantage of our abilities and our skills and use Ljungberg and Montero and Zakuani, our attacking people, and Pat Noonan and give them problems on their defense.”

(On RSL-SEA scoring change . . .) “He [Tyrone Marshall] was very happy. He was excited about it. I think Freddie Ljungberg was excited to have the assist. Again, I guess it was tough to tell a little bit on the replay is what they were saying. But it was certainly a well-placed kick. It was in the right area. Tyrone’s right there. So if it went off [Nat] Borchers head with pressure from Tyrone or if it would have gone off Tyrone’s head, the ball was well played and the runs were good and that’s the reason we got the goal.”
(On defending corner kicks . . .) “Well just defending-wise on corners and on free kicks the things you got to do defensively is you got to be touch tight to your opponent and you have got to be able to see the man and the ball. On the second one, he [Brad Evans] got caught being spun much like Leo [Gonzalez] got spun in the goal that New York scored. So that’s something we have got to put some work in later on this week, just do some free kicks defensively and just remind people of that. I don’t think anybody is more aware or takes it more to heart than Brad if he feels he has made an error. He has made a lot of good plays for our team as well. So right now I know he will take care of what he needs to.”
(On Steve Zakuani . . .) “It was a good goal from the standpoint that it was against the run of play and it was a quick throw-in and Montero did a good job of getting a quick ball out to Steve and his first touch is really what made the goal for him. He had a really good first touch and then was able to put the ball around or actually almost through [Nick] Rimando. It was good for him to get on the board. It was good for our team to score at that moment and hopefully he can continue to help us get early goals because those things always help.”
