Chatting with Patrick Ianni about his fitness (Q&A transcript)

(Q: What happened in preseason with your injury and how do you feel now?)
“Like I said before, early on in an interview in preseason, I felt really good coming into this preseason. It was the first preseason that I was really able to rebuild my body. Between 2006-07 and 2007-08 I had a lot of Olympic stuff going on. So it was good to have that time to rebuild my body this offseason and actually make some good strides from a fitness standpoint, along with working on my game and everything. Coming into preseason I got a good month under my belt and right in that crucial time when we were going into games – unfortunately among a number of different things – my osteitis pubis flared up. And since then I had to take a week-and-a-half, two weeks off and now I’m finally getting back into my stride again. That area feels good and my fitness is starting to make up that deficit. I feel good now.”
(Q: Having a similar injury to Nate Jaqua, how have you treated it and gotten over it?)
“This is something that I’ve dealt with for a couple years now. I’ve got it under control to where I know what I need to do to keep it off. I think the situation that brought it up for me was a very rare one, you couldn’t really predict it until it happened, in terms of double-days and stuff like that. So we sorted that out with the coaching staff in terms of what that would look like in the future for me. But yeah, with Nate’s thing, I was trying to give him advice because it was something that I’ve been through in the past. Even coming out here to Seattle at the beginning of last year, I was taking care of it and putting it behind me so where I came here I’d feel good. I did a lot of work in January of 2008. Obviously with that, I saw Nate going through it, but his injury and mine seemed to be a little different. I think we thought they were similar at first.”


(Q: When did you first start to have that lower-abdomen pain?)
“It came up when I was in Houston, in the middle of 2007. It came up a little bit and I was able to take some time off and it went away. I think it was a little bit of overuse and not getting time off because of Olympic camp and stuff like that. At the time, I wasn’t playing many games so I thought I’d be all right, but I was practicing hard everyday. It really came on the middle of 2008, and that last half of the year between the Olympics and through the Dynamo season. I just made myself available – while taking Celebrex, taking some anti-inflammatories basically – and just played at 75% and pushed through. The coaches knew that and I was just able to do what I could in Houston. It took me to really rehab it in 2008 and just strengthen my entire core, rebuild that area, even the little muscles, not so much the big muscles, but the little muscles that activate and turn everything on.”
(Q: How do you feel now?)
“I feel very good. From every angle now I feel very close to 100%. This area definitely feels 100%, it’s just a matter of trying to go… slowly and surely to bring that deficit back, because you can’t when you’re off for two weeks. The way my body is and works, it takes me a little longer to increase that fitness deficit. But I’ve been able to do that for the last three weeks or so.”
(Q: How frustrating has it been to dress for every game and not to see the field yet? And has your fitness played a part in that?)
“I’m ready to go. It’s always frustrating for me not to be out there. I’m very confident in what I can do. I always want to be on the field and if I’m out there, I feel I can make a difference. From that standpoint, definitely. But at the same time, it’s a team game and I will prepare myself and be ready, even in that situation, always. Then like last year, when I get my opportunities, I’ll make the most of them.”
(Q: What do you need to work on and show the coaches to see the field more?)
“I think like last year it was a matter of being consistent in practice. The most important thing is when you get opportunities to make the most of them. Sigi knows what I’m capable of, I think, but he wants to see it on a consistent basis. I think that shows him that mentally I’m into it. I have to continue to do that and show him that this is a priority for me and that I want to win, just like always.”
