Sounders FC quotes after Tuesday’s training (team release)

Sigi Schmid – Head Coach
(On L.A. Galaxy . . .) “Obviously right now they are the top dog in the league. They are the premier team. They are the ones who have gotten all of the points so far. So it’s going to be a great challenge for us. We are obviously a little bit the underdogs going in so it’s a chance for our fans to see how we respond to that and how we measure ourselves up against the best team in the league right now.”
(On Edson Buddle . . .) “Any time you have an outstanding center forward, obviously he is hot and he is on form, the key for Buddle right now is he doesn’t need many chances to get his goals. But obviously any forward lives off service and so we have got to make sure we cut those service lines and keep the ball from getting into him. A lot of the service comes from Landon Donovan so we have got to contain Donovan. He’s getting some service from other people as well. Juninho is getting involved also. So we have got to cut the service lines from there. And we have got to keep an eye on Edson. We have got to make sure that we have a body on him all the time because right now he’s been, in the early games of the season, it was basically one chance, one goal for them and they have been able to carry that.”

(On Landon Donovan . . .) “He’s a good player. He’s certainly the supply line to Buddle so we know that and he’s a guy we have got to take care of. It’s a little bit similar to last week where you’ve got a big forward like we had [Steven] Lenhart and we let him get away and score one header. But it’s sort of like Donovan is like [Guillermo Barros] Schelotto but he’s more active, he’s a little busier. He looks to the same spaces so we have got to do a good job, just like we did with Guillermo last week, about making those spaces a little difficult to find the ball in. Good players are going to find the ball. Good players are going to get the ball and then you just have to make sure that you limit what they can do once they have the ball.”
Freddie Ljungberg – Midfielder
(On 4-3-3 formation . . .) “I think we are suited quite well. We are going to get Blaise [Nkufo] into the team as well and I think it suits him quite well. So it’s just something to get success into the team. I think we showed in the game over the weekend that we played brilliantly offensively so I think that’s a good sign.”
(On his comfort with 4-3-3 formation . . .) “I have played in a lot of roles but the way we play I prefer to play where I played on Saturday. I’m also very pleased we started to play that way, then I don’t have to play with my back towards goal. I can go after defenders and that’s much more enjoyable.”
(On getting results . . .) “We will. The season is long. Like I said, the main thing is you play good football. Of course we want to win the league but for the players that’s an important thing. You need to have your game working 100% and the way we are doing now is we played on Saturday, even if we didn’t win the game, everyone looks at Columbus as one of the top teams and I think we played much better on Saturday than we did all of last season playing-wise, even if we don’t put the goals in.”
