At least some of it. Seattle doesn’t yet know its play-in game opponent as the draw says Central America 12. We were told that the unknown CCL play-in game opponent is likely from El Salvador, but the country’s soccer federation is in trouble with FIFA for government involvement.
If El Salvador isn’t allowed the berth, Sounders FC will play — as you might imagine — another team from Central America, which would probably be allocated out somehow. Here’s the bit from the website:
- Two berths originally were allocated to El Salvador, but FIFA has suspended the country due to governmental interference in the federation’s affairs. The government has until June 8 to comply with FIFA’s non-intervention requirements or its teams will be barred from international competition, including the Champions League – and its berths will be reassigned.
The Sounders know at least that they’ll play in Group C with Monterrey (Mexico), Saprissa (Costa Rica) and the winner of the playoff between Marathon (Honduras) and Tauro (Panama).
The first leg of the play-in game will be July 27-29, the website indicates that Seattle will host first, but the club didn’t say so at training. The second leg is to be played a week later. Group stage play starts August 17-19.
One nugget of news we did get was, the home play-in game will be played at Qwest Field. Certainly a gesture of how much the team values the tournament. I imagine that would carry over into the group stage too, but that wasn’t confirmed.
