Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes Friday (release)

(On San Jose Earthquakes . . .) “I think Frank [Yallop] has done a good job. He’s got the team believing in itself and the team is playing better. Defensively, they have been very compact and tight in terms of how they have played. Their back four, with the exception of [Ike] Opara being in and out, they have had a pretty consistent back four now with [Jason] Hernandez and with [Chris] Leitch and with [Ramiro]Corrales and [Bobby] Burling has stepped in and played well. They get eight guys back, a lot of times nine guys behind the ball so they make it difficult for you to break them down. So defensively they have been very solid, they have kept themselves in games and they have come up with timely goals when they needed them.”

(On how injuries affect the team . . .) “You always have a little bit of that. I think the week where we had the games on the road in tight sort of added to that. Sometimes guys carry different workloads in games. Sometimes, depending on who you play next to, your workload changes, maybe you end up doing a little more or a little less sometimes. Overall, it’s part of the game. It’s something you have to deal with. That’s why we have got the amount of players on our team that we do. That’s why they are all professionals. Somebody’s injury is another person’s opportunity to play well.”
