Talking Heritage Cup with ex-NASL Sounder Brian Schmetzer

(On the Heritage Cup) “It’s got good intentions because of the history of the old NASL and since I’m a part of that old history, I’d like to think there’s some importance to it. Whether it has a ton of importance to the 36,000 fans we have, I can’t answer that. You never want to completely forget the past, but this certainly is a different franchise in a different era. I know for a fact that when I was down in San Jose last year, there were some old Earthquake fans from the ’70s and ’80s that were like, ‘Hey Schmetzer, I remember you… blah blah blah.” So there are some of those fans that still exist, and probably a lot of our fans as well.”

(On what this game means to the Sounders) “Our team views it as a game that is so vital for us to get a good performance, and to get the three points. We want to get up into second place. The Heritage Cup is secondary. But it’s a very important home game for us and we want to entertain the fans.”
