I skipped out on Sounders FC training today to check out Boca Juniors in action. Lots of good young talent out there, some accomplished players and rising stars. Club legends Juan Roman Riquelme (knee surgery) and Martin Palermo (national team) won’t be around, unfortunately.
The team actually did a lot of simple drills similar to Seattle’s training. Goalkeepers got work taking shots and the field players did a lot of scrimmage work.
It appeared as though the stadium would not be open at full capacity — having sold just 38,000 tickets for the game is surely a reason for that. Expect more of an MLS Cup-type set up in the stands, with the corners in the upper decks still tarped off. But that’s not official.
* * *
1. Here’s asst. coach Omar Larrosa, who played on Argentina’s World Cup winning team in 1978.
2. Some scrimmage work on the far side of the field. Lots of navy blue around.
3. Here Larrosa and some teammates fire shots on goal. Everyone loved Qwest Field.
4. More scrimmage work. Turns out the team didn’t know the game would be on turf. Oops.
