Seattle, Boca Juniors head coaches talk about the friendly

Roberto Pompei – Boca Juniors Head Coach

(On Qwest Field . . .) “This stadium is incredible. It’s marvelous. My son wanted me to take a whole bunch of pictures so that I could show him. It’s an incredible stadium and we’re so excited to be here.”

(On purpose of U.S. tour . . .) “Our goal is to show a good image of the Boca Juniors here in the United States and for the world. We have some players who are training for World Cup right now so we have a lot of young players who are playing here. The main goal is to show a good image of Boca Juniors to the world.”

(On absence of Juan Roman Riquelme and Martin Palermo . . .) “We know that people wanted to see those players but they are training for the World Cup right now. But the reality is the fans want to see the shirts of the Boca’s so that’s what they’re happy to see.”

(On his playing and coaching career . . .) “As a player, I played fifteen years professionally. I never made it to the selection but we won a lot of big tournaments in the fifteen years I was playing. Now, as a coach, I feel so proud to be here with this team, showing what we can do in Seattle.”

(On importance of tomorrow’s game . . .) “It’s always very important to win. We noticed in L.A. that they played very physically. We don’t know how the Sounders are going to play tomorrow but the game was very physical. The MLS right now is in the middle of their season and we just finished up our season so these are friendly games. But every opportunity we have to show a good image of the team is important.”

Sigi Schmid – Sounders FC Head Coach

(On Boca Juniors match . . .) “Get some guys on the field that haven’t been able to get on the field as much. It gives us a chance to look at a couple different combinations as well. But mainly get the rust off some guys and get some playing time for guys because we feel we are a deep team. With our injuries, we have had to go into our depth a little bit. So tomorrow we will go into our depth a little bit more. It’ll be a good exercise for us. It’ll be a good game for the fans and they’ll see a lot of the young, talented players from Boca and they’ll see as well what some our guys can do, having not been on the field that much.”

(On importance of game . . .) “It’s important because when you’re training all that time you want to eventually get into a real game. It’s something that matters, it’s something that counts. When you step out onto the field in front of the fans and all the people at Qwest, that’s got to get you motivated. It’s sort of the reward for putting in all of the hard work so all of those guys that haven’t gotten as many minutes as the other guys are all looking forward to that.”
