A stop and chat with Freddie Ljungberg (interview transcript)

(On Colorado game…) “Of course we’re going to go and try to get a win. I didn’t go there last season, but it’s supposed to be a great pitch. It’s an altitude game, so they say it’s hard to play there. But they lost against New York midweek and it feels like we’re playing well and we want to get results now.”

(On what you saw last night…) “It’s such a different game. It’s a little bit like Juventus played. It’s a little bit different, it’s a bit slower. But I think we can take away that it’s great that we scored three goals. And especially if you look at Noonan’s goal — I spoke with him today — his composure when he gets his chance, he takes his time and puts it in the net. That’s what we need. We can look at that a little bit and say you don’t need to rush things, and when you get the chance, just be calm and put it in the net. I think he showed the experience he has there.”

(On more responsibility on the offense without Hurtado and Alonso…) “Of course the offense should always be sharp, but we need our defense there as well. We have the players, I think, that can fill in. Of course it’s hard. All my sympathies to Kennedy. It’s a long way back, but I know he’s a great player and will come back. Ozzie knows the second time with his thigh, it’s hard mentally, but I think he will go through it and he’ll help us when he gets back. We got Parke not long ago and he’s proven himself in this league before, and I hope he can play well. We have other players as well that can fill in, but mostly I’m sad for them. I think you need to see it more on a personal note, that it’s hard to sit on the sidelines.”

(Is the altitude an issue?) “That’s what the players say, you hit the wall after 20 minutes and get really tired. I wasn’t there, I had a migraine last year in Colorado. They’re scared I’ll get another there because of the altitude, but yeah they say it hits you quite hard. So I think it’s important that we pace the game, we don’t kill ourselves for the first 20 (minutes) and keep energy for the 90 minutes and play wisely.”

(Is altitude an issue for your migraines?) “(Last year) I had the migraine a week or two before and then we had the game in Colorado coming up and (the doctors) were worried that like the altitude affects certain pieces of your body — I didn’t really understand, but that’s what the doctors said. We don’t have those altitudes in Europe, so I didn’t know, but that’s what they said. This time I will definitely play… It’s something new to me.”

(On fitness after San Jose) “I got a kick on my calf again. We were worried if I played yesterday and was kicked again there would be no chance that I could play on Saturday. So I tried to rehab that and I’ll play Saturday.”
