Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid quotes Sunday (via release)

Sigi Schmid – Head Coach

(On Leo Gonzalez’s game last night…) “It was good. Anytime you get a goal from an outside back, it’s a positive for you. But Leo is a pretty resilient guy. He keeps battling away. He has had some tough assignments in our league because you have some fast wingers with Dane Richards, he has played against him twice already, and against Sainey [Nyassi]. But he handles those guys fairly well. All of a sudden he becomes faster; I don’t know what happens in those games. But the goal he scored has definitely got to be a candidate for Goal of the Week and it was just a great strike.”

(On change in formation…) “The most important thing is just having a forward partner in the middle because Ljungberg, when plays the attacking midfielder, second forward, his comfort is to come back and get the ball and run at defenses. So what ends up happening sometimes is we don’t have enough people in front of the goal to take advantage of the service and I think down the line we’ll be able to take advantage of the service more. It makes us very difficult to play against as a team because we can attack you on the right and the left now. We can get behind you on both sides. And it means also when we do get behind you, we’ve got people in the box that can finish that off. So it seems that worked for us. But as much as that, let’s also make sure that our mentality was good going into the game. Our mentality was right and that helped us succeed. But right for us, I think it just fits us better. It allows us to play a more open style of game and that helps us.”

(On playing another game before World Cup break…) “It’s just the way it turned out on the schedule. For us, with the amount of games we are going to run into anyway when we hit July and August, it’s probably good to get another out of the way. Obviously we are looking forward to the game on Thursday, looking forward to D.C. United coming here to play and, as I said to the guys today, yesterday was just a step in the process. It wasn’t a culmination or an, ‘Oh, OK, we are there.’ We have got to continue to work and continue to get it right.”
