FINAL: Seattle Sounders FC 2, D.C. United 3, game thread

Final. D.C. United 3, Sounders FC 2. Seattle gets a couple late goals to make it interesting. James Riley on a deflected shot in the 90th minute and Fredy Montero heads in a Ljungberg cross in the 91st. As you can imagine, writing duties kept me from updating this until now. More coverage to come on the blog

88′: “All we are saying, is give us a goal.” That from the Sounders supporters. I’m stuck with writing duties for now as this disappointing result closes out.

GOAL D.C. Pontius lofts a shot to the far post, bounces off the woodwork and back. Cristman and Keller there but it ends up in the net.

77′: SAVE! Marshall with a dangerous shot on goal saved by Perkins, who then saves

75′: Roger Levesque in for Pat Noonan.

71′: 20 more minutes of trying to break the bunker.

66′: Seattle sub, Nyassi in for Zakuani. Hmmmm. Not sure if there’s an injury concern there…

64′: Seattle sub. Sturgis for Ianni, who might have taken a knock earlier on.

62′: Cristman in for Emilio. Najar got a booking too.

61′: Montero plays a great one-two with Riley, but the defender can’t connect with a shot on goal.

58′: Deflected shot by Ljungberg goes out for a corner kick.

56′: Zakuani with a great run on the left. Sends a great cross into the Noonan, but he can’t connect and it goes out for a corner. It’s punched out by Perkins.

49′: Barry Rice in for Jordan Graye for D.C.

46′: We’re underway in the second half. Leo with a hard foul on Pontius early on.

Halftime: D.C. w/ a shocking 2-0 lead on Seattle. Both goals by Chris Pontius: the 1st was deflected & the 2nd went through Keller’s mitts.

44′: GOAL D.C. Pontius with another shot from distance. Appears to be right at Keller, but though his gloves. Keller tries to dive to keep it off the line, but carries it into the net.

43′: Frustration showing? Ljungberg booked for a two-handed shove on James. Perkins given a card too for the response.

39′: GOAL D.C. Gonzalez with a poor clearance right to Pontius, the young midfielder fires a shot from 20 yards that takes a wicked deflection off a defender’s back past Keller, who was headed the other way.

34′: Zakuani burns McTavish on the left, puts in a cross that Noonan hammers wide. Moments later he beats him again, but sails a cross out for a goal kick.

32′: Emilio backs in hard to Marshall on a goal kick and the Jamaican went down and was limping. He looks OK now.

29′: Noonan flicks a ball onto to Montero who’s running on goal, Perkins smothers it though.

27′: Pontius gets free for D.C. Fires a shot from distance that’s blocked out for a corner. CK cleared by Marshall.

24′: Ljungberg nearly breaks free on the right, but was fouled. Yellow card to Pontius. Provides great service on the free kick, and Ianni climbs high after it, but it’s over his head out for a D.C. throw-in.

23′: Seattle starting to take control now. Another dangerous cross from Ljungberg is cleared. Leo also creating some on the left side, results in a blocked shot by Riley.

19′: Ljungberg is killing people on the right side. Another great run — throw a nutmeg in there too — can’t find a teammate on the service.

17′: Fairly even open to the game. Seattle with the better of the chances, but D.C. getting plenty of possession on the Sounders’ side of the field.

14′: Great diagonal run by Montero, Ljungberg gets it to him, but it’s too late. Flag is up for offside. Perkins made the save anyway.

13′: Fans in the club seats appear to have some artificial noise-makers. They look like little hand-held fans. Huh.

11′: More danger through Ljungberg, another cross blocked out for a corner. It’s cleared.

6′: Ljungberg weaves through a couple defenders. His first cross doesn’t get through. His second is blocked out for a corner. Parke gets to it but heads it just wide…

2′: Here’s what D.C. looks like.

1′: And we’re off! Seattle with the same lineup/formation as last week.

Pregame: There was a World Cup tribute before the walkout. Here’s how the team’s Twitter account described it: “A special African performance honoring the 2010 World Cup occurred just before the teams entered the pitch.”

Pregame: I’m on the record in picking a 2-0 Seattle win. What do you think?

Pregame: Teams warming up right now. We’re probably about a half hour from kickoff. D.C. looks like they’ll be in all-black uniforms. I expect the traditional green-blue-green look for the Sounders at home, but the warmups aren’t tipping anything yet.
