A stop & chat with Sounders FC forward Nate Jaqua (Q&A)

Jaqua, who has been on IR the whole season, played the second half and scored a goal in a 5-0 reserve-game win Friday against the Washington Crossfire PDL team. Reporters caught up with the 6-foot-3 forward after the game.

(Q: You’re back out there again. How do you feel?) “Feel good. Not quite up to fitness yet, but it was good to get to run around and get to play today. I think I had a good week of training too. I wasn’t in everything, but I think I had a solid week and I’ll keep working on my fitness this week and be ready to go when we get back.”

(Q: Are you about a week away from being 100%?) “I’m going to need that next week of training, definitely. Even when I get in the first game, I’m not going to be 90-minutes fit. As a forward you can be in there and not be completely fit, I feel like. So I don’t know how it’s going to go. But I’m looking forward to shooting for that 27th game.

(Q: It feel like a long time coming?) “Yeah, it has been. I still have to get this next week of good training on my own and the the next week training full out. I was still out of things a little bit this week, but it was 35 minutes (today) and I felt like I got some good runs in.”

(Q: On not being available earlier, when you and Sigi Schmid had mentioned that possibility?) “I was going best-case scenario. When I started back and started feeling good, and I had a few hiccups. Kinda strained my groin because there’s a not of scar tissue breaking up on my right side. So yeah, it took longer than I wanted and I was trying to be a little too optimistic. May not have been the best thing.”

(Q: Are you close to being ready mentally?) “I think that’s the biggest thing, and I’m there in that aspect. The rest is just getting the fitness and playing 90 minutes. I still have to get my touch back a little bit. It’s still feeling better, but it’s not quite there.”

(Q: On the emotions of getting out there) “It feels great. It’s tough not being able to go mix it up with the guys and play. That’s why we do it. That’s what makes it fun. Sitting on the sidelines running… I wouldn’t have done track. I like soccer and it’s fun playing. This week has been great for me.”

(Q: Just a reserve game, but what’s a goal feel like?) “It’s good. I think it was more Roger (Levesque) helping me out. I think he could’ve finished that one too. But I appreciate him knocking it across, but it still feels good to hit the back of the net.”
