Sounders FC 2, D.C. United 3 — Sigi Schmid quotes

SIGI SCHMID, Sounders FC head coach

(Opening comments) “Obviously tonight, we got beat by Chris Pontius. He had three goals. The first was fortunate with the deflection. The second one, again you don’t expect Kasey to let one like that through his hands. And then you’re chasing it. When you’re chasing it, it’s difficult. I think we showed character in the end by getting two goals back. Time ran out on us. For us right now, we got the World Cup break. This part of the season is behind us. We can’t go back and recapture the points that were there. We need to focus on the points that are out there, and there are enough points out there to get into the playoffs. We have to come back with our heads clear and focus on what we need to do when we start up and start playing on June 27th.”

(On getting a break during the season) “They know inside themselves their character has to be strong. It is what it is now. Obviously winning the game would’ve been much better. Everybody would’ve felt a lot better. Maybe there’s got to be some soul searching and maybe some guys are having little chats with each other to try and make sure when we come back and we’re sharper and better.”

(On the state of the team being 4-6-3) “We don’t feel great about it, but we come back and we’ve got 17 games left, there’s 51 points. I’ve always said you need a point and a half to get into the playoffs, that’s 45. We got to get 30 points out of 51. We’d like to get more. The points are out there, it’s just a matter of us going out there and getting them.”

(On Keller allowing subpar goals) “I’m sure he’s not happy about that. He’s come up with some big saves for us as well, so we’ve got to remember that part of it. Certainly it’s something that he’ll want to make sure he does better at as he moves forward.”

(Talking to the official after, what about?) “Just the timekeeping seemed a little strange. He had put up three minutes and we scored two goals in injury time, it was still three minutes.”

(On the late scoring surge) “It was just finishing. We were a little bit unlucky. There was the one chance that Tyrone had, he gets the ball across on a corner that gets flicked on that could’ve easily been a goal. James hits a good shot, all of a sudden it broke for us where it hadn’t been breaking for us before. So I mean tactically we really didn’t change out of a 4-4-2 today. We changed some personnel. I thought in the second half there was no need to change out of the 4-4-2 because we were getting at them. We were creating things. We were getting forward. We had enough chances to equalize the game. The third goal was a little bit of a backbreaker for us because that was one we obviously didn’t want to take. I don’t know if that was there only shot in the second half, I think it might’ve been. Tactically from a standpoint of us, we wanted to get energy on the field. That was the reason we made the changes. We wanted to get more a physical player in there with Roger. That was one of the other reasons for the change. We really didn’t change out a 4-4-2 today because we thought Ljungberg was getting at them on the wings and we were close. We still got to improve our finishing.”

(Zakuani, Ianni subs tactical or injury?) “Tactical changes.”

(On finishing) “We had enough shots in the first half, we didn’t put them on goal. We’re still in that situation of getting shots on goal. A lot of times when we got to the endline, I think Freddie Ljungberg got in on the right side often in the first half, and the timing of our runs just wasn’t good and we’d get in too deep sometimes. We did get anything off that. And we need to make better use and get something off that.”

(What can change to be better?) “Getting a big body up front like Jaqua will certainly help. Hopefully when we come back from this break he’ll be available to us. Nkufo is another big body. Having a big body up there certainly helps us. And we’ve got to continue to work now that we’ve got Freddie on the flank we’ve got to be able to finish off the service that he brings. He gave the service to Montero for the goal. So we just got to read that, the timing has to continue to improve.”

(Ljunberg on the right) “I think it makes us a lot tougher to mark and matchup with as a team. He was voted one of Arsenal’s best all-time players as a player in that position. Nobody plays with the touchline in this league, or any other leagues, as well as he does. He’s sacrificed coming out of the middle and it’s a good team-sacrifice from him. I think it’s made us a much tougher team to figure out. We need Zakuani on the top of his game. I didn’t think he was on the top of us his game tonight. He’s had more good games for us, for sure. Again, at the end of the day, even though it took us a while, we did get two goals. We’ve got to continue to score goals, but the goals we gave up tonight were the reason we lost.”
