My “I’m hardly an expert” World Cup predictions — Group B

GROUP B

Argentina — Qualifying woes are already forgotten and many think Maradona’s side is the favorite.

Greece — Have won a big tournament (Euro ’04) and are always competitive with a defense-first style.

Nigeria — Will miss John Obi Mikel, but should be competitive. Crowd support always helps.

South Korea — Made the semis at home a while back. Don’t think they lost once in qualifying.

Player to watch: Lionel Messi, Argentina (best in the world? he’ll have to prove it on the big stage)

Big game: Nigeria v. Greece, June 17, 7 a.m. PT (expect 2nd-place to be on the line here)

Prediction: Everyone, including me, would be surprised if Messi and the boys don’t roll through to first place in the group. I think it will be battle for that second berth, which gets a winnable game in the knockout round stage against the winner of Group A.

1. Argentina 7 pts.

2. Nigeria 4 pts.

3. Greece 3 pts.

4. South Korea 2 pts.
