My “I’m hardly an expert” World Cup predictions — Group E

GROUP E

Cameroon — The best healthy African player (Samuel Eto’o) can carry this team if his head’s right.

Denmark — A feature in SI tagged them as a ‘happy to be here’ team, but they want to advance.

Japan — Struggled against weak teams in qualifying, but be wary of Nakamura with that zany ball.

Netherlands — The group favorites for sure. The offense can go toe-to-toe with anyone, but defense…

Player to watch: Wesley Sneijder, Netherlands (maestro of the Oranje could take ’em deep)

Big game: Cameroon v. Netherlands, June 24, 11:30 a.m. PT (can Eto’o punish a weak Dutch backline?)

Prediction: There is certainly a prohibitive favorite here with Holland, but that other berth is certainly there to be had. The runner-up also could likely face Italy in the knockout stage, which most people thought was the most overrated team in the field. Should be entertaining.

1. Netherlands 7 pts.

2. Cameroon 4 pts.

3. Denmark 3 pts.

4. Japan 3 pts.
