So here’s how it shaped up, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage/round of 16 and the bottom two teams eliminated:
1. Uruguay 2-0-1, 7 pts. (4 goals scored, 0 goals allowed, +4 GD)
2. Mexico 1-1-1, 4 pts. (3 goals scored, 2 goals allowed, +1 GD)
3. South Africa 1-1-1, 4 pts. (3 goals scored, 5 goals allowed, -2 GD)
4. France 0-2-1, 1 pt. (1 goal scored, 4 goals allowed, -3 GD)
What I got right
— Mexico would show well. I predicted them to win the group, and they certainly appeared to be the best team in each game. Even despite losing to Uruguay.
— South Africa would just miss out, becoming the first host nation not to advance.
What I got wrong
— Everything else. I didn’t predict France’s collapse (not sure anyone did), and was fooled into thinking Les Bleus would steal the second berth.
— Uruguay’s defense was much better than anticipated, as was that whole team. They could make a deep run.
— Uruguay will play South Korea (the runner-up in Group B) at 7 a.m. PT on Saturday
— Mexico will play Argentina (the winner of Group B) at 11:30 a.m. PT on Sunday
