So here’s how it shaped up, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage/round of 16 and the bottom two teams eliminated:
1. United States 1-0-2, 5 pts. (4 goals scored, 3 goals allowed, +1 GD)
2. England 1-0-2, 5 pts. (2 goals scored, 1 goal allowed, +1 GD)
3. Slovenia 1-1-1, 4 pts. (3 goals scored, 3 goals allowed, 0 GD)
4. Algeria 0-2-1, 1 pt. (0 goals scored, 2 goals allowed, -2 GD)
What I got right
— The two teams that would advance. Got ’em a bit flip-flopped due to a tiebreaker, but I’ll take it. To be fair everyone did.
— Slovenia and Algeria would miss out, in that order. Though both impressed me and were certainly tough outs.
What I got wrong
— How good England would be. Or not good. Yeesh what happened to Wayne Rooney? And that Gerrard-Lampard midfield still isn’t any different. Good luck with that draw to the semis.
— How good the U.S. would be. Surprisingly good. At least in the run of play, if not finishing (even the chances not ruined by bad officiating). Could very well make a run now.
— The U.S. will play Ghana (the runner-up in Group D) at 11:30 a.m. PT on Saturday
— England will play Germany (the winner of Group D) at 7 a.m. PT on Sunday
