So here’s how it shaped up, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage/round of 16 and the bottom two teams eliminated:
1. Paraguay 1-0-2, 5 pts. (3 goals scored, 1 goal allowed, +2 GD)
2. Slovakia 1-1-1, 4 pts. (4 goals scored, 5 goals allowed, -1 GD)
3. New Zealand 0-0-3, 3 pts. (2 goals scored, 2 goals allowed, 0 GD)
4. Italy 0-1-2, 2 pts. (4 goals scored, 5 goals allowed, -1 GD)
What I got right
— Well I picked Italy-Paraguay-Slovakia to all tie with six points in the group, which means I thought the latter two teams would be very competitive. I guess that’s something.
— Nothing else really.
What I got wrong
— Uhhh, Italy. The defending champs were arguably the most disappointing team in the tournament. And that’s saying something because there have been a handful of ’em.
— New Zealand. I picked the Kiwis to lose all three. Instead they didn’t lose any.
